Happy 4:20! J. Brookinz x Grey Granite present Gateway 2!

Happy 4:20!  J. Brookinz reunites with fellow Heavy Gun co-founder Grey Granite for the highly anticipated sequel Gateway 2!:

J. Brookinz x Grey Granite present Gateway 2 by Heavy Gun 2011

On the follow up to his acclaimed album The Gateway Drug: THC, his highness J. Brookinz comes correct with a crew of 28 collaborators and the producer’s take on psy rock.  Bringing his typical partner-in-crime Grey Granite into the mix this time around, the duo put together an ensemble cast composed of some of the dopest lyricists in Indianapolis.  The project’s incredible collaborative feel came from a 48 hour studio session in which Brookinz and Grey recorded with 20+ musicians.  The epic studio lock-in was facilitated by indie rock band The Kemps and the use of their practice space Helter Shelter.  This is the perfect album to jam over the upcoming 4:20 holiday, and if you live in Indianapolis, come check out the release party on April 20th at Rock Lobster in Broad Ripple!

Ok ok, it’s a few days late, but what else do you expect from an album dedicated to getting high!

J. Brookinz - Stuck ft. Grey Granite, Kid Algebra, & Nate Karamanski

In preparation for Gateway 2, J. Brookinz links up with Grey Granite, Kid Algebra, and Nathan Karamanski on the lead single “Stuck”:

J. Brookinz - Stuck ft. Grey Granite, Kid Algebra, & Nathan Karamanski by Heavy Gun 2011

With April now in full swing, J. Brookinz sparks up the first joint from Gateway 2.  “Stuck” is a psychedelic ode to being so high you can’t move that features Grey Granite, Kid Algebra, and Nathan Karamanski.  The track is a hazy representation of the Indianapolis beatsmith’s direction for Gateway 2.  On the follow up to his smoker’s delight The Gateway Drug, J. Brookinz gets in touch with his inner hippie by crafting a hip-hop album from the producer’s psy rock influences.  Watch for Gateway 2 to blaze up April 15, 2011 just in time for your holiday celebrations!

alpha.live + J. Brookinz - Six Shot EP

alpha.live + J. Brookinz - Six Shot by Heavy Gun 2011

Indy’s god emcee alpha.live links up with J. Brookinz, the Highest Man Alive, for Six Shot, a tribute to lyric and sample driven hip-hop:

The teaser video for Six Shot said it all: 1 emcee, 1 producer, 2 legends, 6 shots!  After several years of friendly one-off collaborations, alpha.live and J. Brookinz link up to give hip-hop junkies a hot shot in the arm of impeccable beats with perfectly laced lyrics.  The pair first collaborated on the now infamous OG version of The Bar featuring Grey Granite, then built upon that with the critically acclaimed “Obama 08” that was featured on blogs like Kevin Nottingham, and have recently collabbed on a track for Brookinz’s exalted The Gateway Drug.  Six Shot picks up where their relationship left-off with Brookinz’s penchant for chipmunk soul and alpha’s love of thought provoking, creative lyrics.  From the lead single “The Come Up” to the highly processed closing track “Blue Skies”, Six Shot proves to be dead on the mark all six rounds.

Every city has that one lyricist that everyone has to admit is a beast on the mic; in Indianapolis that artist is alpha.live.  Gentleman Alphonse cut his teeth in freestyle circles in Indianapolis long before every dropping his now infamous FIXTape and was named one of Indy’s top freestyle emcees by Nuvo in 2009.  Since then, alpha has dropped the well received Steal From The Rich w/ Dope Couture’s CMART, The Love Story, and Soul Cinema with producer Soul Cinematik.  Currently alpha.live is working with Spitten Writtens to craft video adaptations of each track on Six Shot and Soul Cinematik to finish their next project Soul Cinema 1.5!

During the spring and summer of 2010, J. Brookinz reasserted why he is hands down the Highest Man Alive.   4/20/2010 found the producer (and sometimes rapper) releasing his most well received project to date.  The Gateway Drug: THC was Mr. Brookinz’s love letter to the light of his life—marijuana.  As a testament to how intertwined cannabis and hip-hop have become in American culture, the project was featured on blogs such as Ruby Hornet, Kick Kick Snare, Mostly Junk Food, Noise Porn, Check The Rhymes, and Tune Devil.  Watch for J. Brookinz to follow up The Gateway Drug’s success with a sequel for this year’s holiday!

Happy (Belated) New Year from Heavy Gun

Heavy Gun kicks of 2011 with new music from Oreo Jones & Sinclair Wheeler, alpha.live & J. Brookinz, and Andy D. & Grey Granite!:

2010 saw Heavy Gun grow and mature from a group of like minded musicians into a full fledged label and movement within the Midwest hip-hop community and culminated with Heavy Gun being honored by Nuvo Newsweekly. As a means of saying “thank you” to all of the fans, blogs, djs, and anyone that supported Heavy Gun in 2010, we give you this taste of what we have in store for you in 2011. This sampler includes a Oreo Jones’s and Sinclair Wheeler’s remix of “Blame Game” by Kanye West, alpha.live rocking a J. Brookinz production, and a remix of Grey Granite’s “Not A Robot” featuring Andy D. With your help, Heavy Gun is set to make 2011 bigger and brighter than 2010!

Oreo Jones + Sinclair Wheeler - Blame Game by HeavyGunRecs

Oreo Jones made a ton of noise in 2010, and he’s not about to stop in 2011. On January 13th, Oreo is going to release his collaborative indie rock EP Oreo Jones & Friends featuring Jookabox, Woodhands, Ko of Slothpop, BLKNHBD, We Are Hex, Laura Balke, Grey Granite, J. Brookinz. DJ Metrognome, and Fair Fjola, which is a benefit project for VH1’s Save The Music between X103, Butler Scion, My Old Kentucky Blog, and Heavy Gun Recordings. If you’re in Indianapolis, make sure you check out the free release show @ Local’s Only that night! Also, Oreo is set to drop his follow up to the Delicious EP with producer 90lbs titled Super Model Death Dive sometime early this spring.

alpha.live - The Come Up (Prod. J.Brookinz) by HeavyGunRecs

J. Brookinz, the highest man alive, had an extremely uplifting year with the success of his album The Gateway Drug: THC. 2011 will find the smokin’ producer rolling up the sequel to The Gateway Drug, as well as producing an EP for one of Indy’s dopest emcees alpha.live. We’ve always considered alpha a member of the HG family; it just took the right set of circumstances to get him to wrap a project for us. 6 Shot is a 6 track of alpha getting live on J. Brookinz beats and will serve as the precursor to his album Soul Cinematic 1.5.

Grey Granite - Not A Robot Remix Ft. Andy D. by HeavyGunRecs

One of the founders of Heavy Gun, Grey Granite will continue his steady output of music from 2010. Grey’s first new project of 2011 will be the release of a deluxe edition of Pixelated Lazer Face Bass Monster featuring a new original and remixes from Aaron Hogan, Andy D, Cool Hand Lex, Dave Wrangler, Infuze, J. Brookinz, Twenty-five Lighters, and Sonkin. Watch for that to hit digital and Indianapolis music retailers in late February. Additionally, Grey is completing work on a more traditional hip-hop release with DJ Metrognome featuring exclusive J. Brookinz production that should be dropping sometime before summer.

New Grey Granite REMIX EP ft. Mystikos Quintet, Tha Doc, Modest Haus, and Yeti-One

HG005 - The Off Safety Remixes EP drops on Tuesday with new Grey Granite remixes by Mystikos Quintet, Tha Doc, Modest Haus, and Yeti-One:

The new remix EP from Grey Granite and Heavy Gun Recordings will be available in online music retailers Tuesday with remixes by Mystikos Quintet, Tha Doc, Modest Haus, and Yeti-One.  As the second single from Lust Poisons Pride, “Off Safety” debuted last summer with a thunderous fanfare and easily became one of the most popular songs on the album.  To help promote the album and give other musicians an opportunity, the Heavy Gun crew decided to hold a remix competition.  After 1000s of downloads and several submissions, these are the 4 remixes chosen to be on the EP.  Each presents a different take on the original by incorporating elements of  dubstep, trip-hop, and techno.

Tracklist:
1. Grey Granite - Off Safety
2. Grey Granite - Off Safety (Mystikos Quintet Refix)
3. Grey Granite - Off Safety (Tha Doc’s Gunnin’ Remix)
4. Grey Granite - Off Safety (Modest Haus Remix)
5. Grey Granite - Off Safety (Yeti-One Remix)

Over the past couple of years, Grey Granite has consistently distinguished himself from other vocalists by perpetually reinventing his style and jumping on anything that catches his interest.  Starting with his legendary Amplifies the Killers project to his recent immaculate album Lust Poisons Pride, Grey has been one of the few artists in the Midwest to successfully go left and follow his sonic dreams. His creativity has recently garnered the support of Kick Kick Snare, Ruby Hornet, Loyal KNG, Noise Porn, Nuvo, and Musical Family Tree and several other media outlets.  Now with his partner J. Brookinz, the duo have launched Heavy Gun Recordings and are beginning next portion f their journey.

To help promote the project, we are including links to MP3s of the original and Tha Doc’s Gunnin’ Remix.  Feel free to share.  Also, a Sound Cloud link is at the bottom to allow you to stream the whole project.

Video

Today is the world premier of the music video for the remix of Grey Granite & J. Brookinz’s single “Colorful Mask” ft. alpha.live:

A few weeks back, Grey Granite made a bit of a stir with the remix of his electropop hit “Colorful Mask” featuring the talented emcee alpha.live. The track was featured on Kick Kick Snare, Ruby Hornet, Loyal KNG, Noise Porn, Nuvo, and Musical Family Tree. Within days, Grey put together a concept for a music video and linked up with a videographer to bring the concept to life. Having grown up during the original freestyle walking movement in the 90s, the musician decided to take the world on a freestyle-walking tour of his city, Indianapolis. As you can see in the video, Indy is like every other city in the world—everyone wears a colorful mask.
